September 29, 2012

We are bringing this blog back revamped as a rock music blog that will focus on the biggest rock news of the week.

Now that we have introductions out of the way, it’s time to talk about the biggest rock music story that’s been all over the Internet, Billie Joe Armstrong’s “meltdown.”

YouTube user xClandestinex uploaded a video on YouTube showing the lead singer of Green Day getting angry and smashing his guitar at a show.

According to Consequence of Sound, Green Day had its set cut short at the iHeartRadio Festival so then Usher could play a longer set.

When the set timer went down to say “1 Minutes,” front man Billie Joe Armstrong took to the microphone and screamed “One f—ing minute? You’re going to give me one f—ing minute?”

He went on to talk about how he had been around since 1988 and that he wasn’t Justin Bieber and repeatedly saying “one f—ing minute.”

Around the 1 minute 40 second mark in the video, Armstrong smashed his guitar and walked off stage.  You can see bassist Mike Dirnt smash his bass guitar after Armstrong smashed his own guitar.

The next day, Green Day announced that Armstrong would be going into rehab for substance abuse.

Green Day is known as a punk band and smashing guitars is one of the things punk bands have been known for doing, In recent years, Green Day’s reputation as a punk band has changed, so you could see this as trying to be more punk. But is playing a big festival with acts like Usher signify punk rock?

It’s also important to know that this happened a few days prior to the release of the band’s new, Uno! so you could also see this as a move to draw attention to the album release.

What do you think of Billie Joe Armstrong’s “meltdown?” Was it really a meltdown? Was it just rock stars acting like rock stars? Or was it just an attempt to get people to know about the new album? Let us know in the comments section.
